"Sometimes you just have to get away with the girls...." Enough said!
But! BUT.... why is Carrie back in her old walk-up apartment... two years on??

Well, this bucket of fun made me laugh.
no longer a DISGUSTING thing, thanks to Dylan's Candy Bar.
Crunchy, chocolately badness -- in a trash can. Feels kinda wrong to say, "Yum!"

It's been about two months, and I'm still all a swoon over my relatively new Apple iPhone. Apps, I love them! Too much ... obviously. I have three pages/screens of them so far. Family members have witnessed my obsession first hand & gave me some lovely iTunes gift cards for Christmas. Aw! In the hopes of receiving such a bounty, I had several iTunes items pinpointed for my Boxing Day purchasing pleasure. Oh, yes! Don't you just love when you wish for something and then you get it?
But ...my uncomplicated love for my phone hit a hiccup. My purchase of my first post-Christmas iTunes app did not trigger my gift card balance to slither down one cent. Nothing. Download completed & my full balance still on parade. Figuring that the iTunes site must be suffering from some sleepy holiday glitch, I emailed the Apple gang to spell out my difficulty. Please bill my gift card balance and *not* my credit card, please & thank you. Sounds simple enough, right? Right.
Til this morning, that is... when my inbox broke the frustrating news. Apple does not allow the purchase of apps via iTunes gift cards in Canada. And that's not all...Canadians cannot buy games with gift cards either! So it's just music then? Maybe a TV show or two? Why not apps... or games? I checked the very teeny print on the back of all three of my gift cards and there was not ONE mention of this glitch...not a peep. Same goes for their iTunes site. SERIOUSLY!!!! On the page where you can redeem your gift cards, there's a neverending list of terms & conditions but NOT ONE WORD concerning usage -- or the lack thereof - of iTunes gift cards for the purchase of apps or games.
Am I the only person who thinks this practice is totally wrong? What gives? Can our friends in the States, or England buy apps and games with iTunes gift cards? Are us Canucks the only ones stuck at the till with gift cards that cannot be used for what we really want from iTunes?
Horrible business practices, Apple!! You dangle these delicious apps and games like some forbidden fruit in your TV commercials but when we want to use, heaven forbid, gift cards to snap them up, we're prohibited without explanation. And what's worse.. their "customer service" reps didn't even acknowledge my displeasure! I received emails that look like an automatic drone-worthy reply... "I am glad I could assist you today" -- Excuse me? No, you twat...you didn't assist me AT ALL. You didn't even type one iota of a sentence that even recognized that I had a complaint *at all*.
I'm sure my fury at iTunes will pass *someday* but for today, tomorrow....this month maybe, Apple is just rotten to the core. Blech.

You can even attach their Lego alarm clock too! Neat!

Because we get so much snow in the Great White North, the holiday gods deemed fit to give us Canucks another day off, following Christmas. Alas, Boxing Day was born!
Well... it seems like a good enough reason to me!
Millions of Canadians blearily trudge out in the early, frigid light of December 26 to stand in line for door-crasher Boxing Day sales. Me, I'll be tucked warmly in bed with sugar plums still dancing in my head. I've done enough pre-Christmas shopping, thanks and nothing, NOTHING will entice me to get up at 5am to venture out in the cold to buy more crap.
*Ahem*.... Boxing Day has nothing to do with fighting, boxing gloves or the like. Nor is it in regard to tossing out all the boxes from opened presents from the day before. For an explanation on what Boxing Day *really* is.... click here.

I couldn't say it better myself! MERRY CHRISTMAS!!
Thursday, December 24, 2009
Well, it did snow in Manchester this week....
Try JibJab Sendables® eCards today!
...I'm a child of the '80s! "Do They Know It's Christmas" -- it never gets old!
Yes, I posted this video last Christmas too....
Not only is the song fab, and the stellar array of UK pop stars incredible (leave your egos at the door -- and they DID!), but it's also a timely reminder to think of people who are less fortunate as yourself. It's never too late to donate to a charity near or far.

A Christmas classic from Warner Brothers.
Enjoy this wintery lesson from 'A Christmas Story.'
Tuesday, December 22, 2009
With Christmas on the cusp, it's a bit odd to be enthusing about Valentine's Day, but in this case...I'm all hyped over the February-bound movie, "Valentine's Day", not the greeting card holiday.
Stars! STARS!! All I can see is stars! This movie is chock full of Hollywood faves, both young (Taylor Swift, Taylor Lautner), in their prime (Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Garner, Jessica Alba, Ashton Kutcher, Julia Roberts), and legendary (Shirley MacLaine). I'm DIZZY from all this overwhelming star power! And Topher Grace is in there too! Yay!
'Valentine's Day' kinda has the feel of 'Love Actually' to me.... a movie with individual storylines circling a similar premise... love and what it means, actually. If 'Valentine's Day' turns out to be anything like its British doppelganger, than we are in for a treat (with none of the after-indulging guilt -- Valentine's chocolates, I'm leering at you!).
Kicking back, chillin' without a care in the world.
Looks like *someone* got their Christmas shopping done & all wrapped up!

"Look what he can do!!"
Christmas wouldn't be the same without the classic Rankin/Bass Christmas specials.
"Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer's" Abominable Snowman scared me to bits when I was a kid. Those intense eyes! The fangs! The padded feet!
Now, he's just so cuddly and fuzzy, and his comb-over would make even Donald Trump envious. Truth be told, today I'd be more frightened to encounter Sam the Snowman! Now he's a bit creepy!
Dylan's Candy Bar... you've out done yourself once again.
This mini old-fashioned popcorn wheelie cart can be your's for just under $65 US.
Better than Jiffy Pop (do they still make that?), or the now-standard microwave popcorn any day.

Onion ring mints....
Need I say more?
Onion breath....why fight it, when you can enhance it.
The thought of forcing down a meal created in a fondue pot is quite revolting to me but Dylan's Candy Bar has taken the idea & given it an appealing twist.
Meet the Chocolate Fondue Fountain.
Forget sickly melted cheese goo....this chocolate trickler is just like the contraption used at office parties everywhere - only smaller! I've attended too many parties to mention where the food highlight for many (hmmmm.... don't get out much?) was the unveiling of the iconic chocolate fountain. People go mad for this thing... so for Dylan's to unleash a tinier, home appropriate version, well, I'm sure they've made many a holiday more fun...more delish!
It's kinda cheap too.... less than $80 US, so this thing is appealing for lots of reasons!

Without question, the most hilarious SNL of the past few years featured Jon Hamm as guest host. We laughed, we snickered...we laughed some more.... unlike when his 'Mad Men' co-star, January Jones graced the SNL stage (least said about that disaster, the better...).
Could it be that someone heard our pleas for Jon to return??? Please!? Pretty please?!
If Jon's 'Mad Men' co-star, Rich Sommer (Harry Crane) can be believed, it's all happening! During an interview with the TV Squad website, Rich spilled the beans that Jon was booked to make SNL funny all over again this coming January.
I hope he's right!
Thanks to Gabrielle for the tip!! :)
It's not everyday that music fans get to spend an evening in the splendor that is the Royal Albert Hall in London.
It's not everyday that Depeche Mode perform in the venerable music hall.
On February 17, 2010, Depeche Mode will step on the Royal Albert Hall stage for the very first time to perform a special charity concert in aid of the Teenage Cancer Trust.
100% of Depeche's profits will be donated to this wonderful charity which helps British teens fighting cancer.
Tickets go on sale TOMORROW at 9am UK time (4am ET). I couldn't think of a more worthwhile reason to get up in the middle of the night! Tickets can be purchased TOMORROW (December 18) here.

IT'S ABOUT BLOODY TIME!!!!
The best movie EVER (in my opinion....oh, and EW kinda likes it too) will finally be given the Blu-Ray treatment next Spring.
Warner Bros. has announced that the 'Lord of the Rings' trilogy will be released on the movie geeks' format of choice on April 6, 2010. While the release of the 9 disc set is fantastic news, true obsessed (yes, that's me) fans will still have to wait for the extended versions of the movie to see the light of a Blu-Ray day. The April 6 edition will feature the theatrical versions of the three films -but with 7 hours of extras, I think we'll be occupied for quite some time!
Cookies 'n' milk for Santa!!
Save Santa's waistline with these adorable milk and chocolate chip cookie pins from Shana Logic. No calories but plenty of cute fun!

Canada doesn't have many animated Christmas specials that we can be proud of - but one that is a true gem, and lost from TV airwaves for some unknown reason - is 'Cosmic Christmas'.
Made in the late 70s after the success of 'Star Wars', it was a TV staple for many of us wee Canucks and then....it disappeared. Such a shame! Some lovely soul on YouTube decided to share a copy and now it's my gift to you. It's a bit beat up and missing some scenes but the essence is still there.
It's lovely and cool. Enjoy!

With all the special themed Monopoly & Trivial Pursuit games, it's kinda strange when you realize that there hasn't been a Beatles themed board game 'til now!
This limited edition Beatles Trivial Pursuit has over 2,500 questions spanning from the group's early days through to their solo projects - it's a magical mystery tour of musical fun!

Blech! Excuse my lack of manners here, but shouldn't this product be called 'Eggnog Barfballs'?
Makes me wanna hurl just looking at them.
I'm all for holiday season mash ups but this one is just plain nauseating.
Who, indeed -- would want this clunky monstrosity of an owl watch...heavily hanging off one's neck?
Be wise, and skip this bird brained tat.

Zoey gets into the Christmas spirit with her first visit to Santa!
She's been a good puppy this year, Santa..... honest! Okay, I *may* be stretching the truth a tiny bit but....look at her... she's adorable! A little mischief never hurt anyone!
I'm a very proud puppy mum!

This strangely cool beach ball lampshade would be the perfect gift for:
A: The sun, surf & sand lover who is perpetually saving coin for their next beachy getaway,
B: The Liverpool FC fan you wish to kid,
C: The crazy relation with a nautical themed family room,
D: All of the above
Yeah, this quiz was a no-brainer and *way* too easy. Answer is D: all of the above -- but personally, I'd especially like to gift this lampshade to B: the Liverpool FC fan you wish to kid...unfortunately, I don't think they'll see the humour in it! Whoopsie!
If I wasn't loving Google Street View enough... the people at the helm have added the famous cobbles of TV's "Coronation Street" to their collection.
I am a Corrie addict and was fortunate to visit the set three times during trips to the UK in the '90s. Now, I think the street is closed to tourists which is a bloody shame!
At least Google Street View can let now let you spin around and visit the Kabin, Roy's Rolls... or the Rovers! Just make sure that you steer clear of evil Tony.

Canada's humble "Poppy" quarter, issued as a special remembrance to our soldiers & war dead in 2004, apparently raised espionage fears amongst the Pentagon in the US!
The Americans thought that the poppy quarter issued by the Canadian Mint with its special coating to prevent the red from rubbing off, was actually a radio frequency transmitter.
I kid you not.
The Toronto Star reports on an investigation by AP brass that focuses on a series of emails that circulated a few years back between Pentagon officials in Washington, DC. They seriously believed our commemorative poppy quarter was the latest thing on the spy scene.
Blame Canada - yet again - d'oh! Perhaps the Americans should pay attention to their real enemies instead?
Some people feel that art is too often a snotty medium with no sense of humour. Fear not, for I have found a website that makes art fun and accessible for everyone.
Check out Little People -- A Tiny Street Art Project. The creator, Slinkachu, takes teeny handpainted "people" and drops them into situations on the streets of London as his blog states "to fend for themselves." Installation art with humour!
Wee boaters navigate puddles, women hang laundry across alleyways and super heroes take a respite -- on the lip of a discarded beer can. The little figures are nifty in themselves but where this project really shows its stuff, is in each series of photographs which depict the people up-close and far-away... uncovering the reality of where the little ones are actually located (downspout, bottle cap, trash).
Mr. Superhero (pictured here) is tempted by the "delights" in the red light district -- or is he? Pan out and he's actually at the footprint of a drainpipe in Southwark, London. Fun!
Art for the people - *with* the people!

Who says that change purses have to be boring & blah?
Not the folks at Cloth Ears! They feature a whole range of wonderfully whimsical accessories ~ travel items, wash bags, makeup catch-alls ~ all with this vintage letter theme.
I give top marks for their "paper plane purse" -- Save your pennies for a rainy day, indeed!

The Christmas season has officially kicked off! 'The Grinch' grumped up TV last night, flurries are invading the forecast & Dairy Queen has gifted us with the sweetest of holiday greetings.
Here comes the Candy Cane Chill DQ Blizzard!
Yummy chocolate chunks mix with frosty peppermint candy cane swirly bits -- all within the creamy vanilla soft serve that we know & love.
Forget leaving Santa cookies & milk -- the Candy Cane Chill Blizzard is tops of the jolly fella's list!
Here's one cute way to make the holidays stick.
Bandages paying tribute to the modern seasonal classic, 'A Christmas Story.' With three chuckle-some designs to choose from -- Red Ryder BB gun, pink bunny suit & everyone's fave leg lamp -- there's Christmas cheer for all your bumps and bruises.
Disclaimer: these bandages are REALLY fab but they won't be of much help for injuries as a result of affixing your tongue to freezing cold metal lamp posts.

...or should I say, coffee?
Cheesiest movie tie-in... 7-Eleven® and the new Robert Downey Jr./Jude Law vehicle, "Sherlock Holmes."
The ads running in magazines such as 'Entertainment Weekly' exclaim, "Mystery Solved. 7-Eleven® has great coffee," and they invite consumers to "Investigate our coffee." Er, no thanks! Robert & Jude looking all hot and intense won't lure me into your fluorescent coffee-peddling establishment.
Too bad "Sherlock Holmes" doesn't have a more exciting marketing partner. 7-Eleven® Coffee? Why? Is the movie that dull that you need copious cups of 7-Eleven®'s java to get through the flick? If you're going that route... pick Starbucks or some other merchant with a little more coolness.

Yes, I am all about iPhone apps at the moment, and I'm *always* all about Dairy Queen, so to uncover TWO apps that focus on my ice creamy obsession --- I'm in dessert heaven.
Dairy Queen lovers can download a 'Where's DQ?' app to their iPhones *and* a strangely addictive game app called 'DQ Craze.'
The 'Where's DQ?' locator app is a no brainer; I picked up this lifeline without a second thought. It is what it says it is. Find the most readily available DQ in your vicinity wherever you may be. My local DQs are permanently emblazoned on my personal radar but should I wander off into unknown territory, I'll always know there's a safe DQ haven only a few iPhone touches away. I feel better just knowing....it is there! A Blizzard waiting with my name on it. YUM.
To be frank, I gave the 'DQ Craze' app more than a once over before deciding on spending the 99 cents to grab it. Games on iPhones are a bit too much of the time-waster for me but I have to say, I LOVE IT. I know, it's kinda surprising. I had no idea that I would enjoy this match-3 game so much. Maybe it's the teeny DQ treats that are all lined up and waiting to be organized into batches of three, or the fact that you serve 'customers' their treats when they are ready....I'm not sure why I like it so much but it's silly and fun to look at. I am a big geek, no?
The only way it would get any better - if it dispensed Blizzards on the spot. Apple, get on that will you?

As a girl in love with London, I can never ever have enough of the city by the Thames.
LOVE this colourful tray featuring London landmarks available at Rockett St. George.
If you can't travel to London, best to bring it to you!
Today is Thanksgiving south of the border.
To all my American friends and readers, I wish you a very happy day full of food, family & the Macy's Parade. Ah, how I wish I were in NYC for the festivities like last year.
Americans celebrate Thanksgiving like no one else. Big! Delicious! A ton of fun!
I dragged out this silly holiday chapeau for my Canadian Thanksgiving post last month so it's fitting that it gets another airing.
Who invents this stuff!?

Don't you just love a new musical discovery? I do!
There's a Sears holiday commercial airing in Canada (anywhere else?) right now and it features this lovely girlie tune, all happy bounce and giddy fun. Thanks to my Shazam! app on my iPhone, I know what it is! Hurrah!
'Don't Let Me Fall' by Lenka. She's from Australia. She's lovely. She's now in my iPod. Hurrah, indeed.
Please view the musical treat of Lenka performing her gem of a tune earlier this year in L.A.

Show your love of all things British with this sparkly Union Jack heart decoration from Accessorize. Born to be a new addition to your Christmas tree, this stuffed heart could actually adorn your home all year long.
Accessorize, the wonderfully affordable accessories brand from the UK, now ships to the U.S. -- but NOT Canada!!!!! Pity!
Zoey hates cartoons on TV. HATES them! With a crazed puppy passion.
'Family Guy'? Not welcome in our household.
Commercials with animated characters? Nope.
With Christmas nearing, I'm fretting that the usual holiday fare of animated Rankin & Bass specials, A Charlie Brown Christmas, The Grinch...will be a no-go now that the little, naughty Schipperke has taken over the proceedings.

...keeps boredom away! And probably the doctor too.
As a relatively new iPhone owner, I'm still discovering new apps that rock my world. It's been surprising to me how many apps are lifesavers -- relatively speaking!
The 'Around Me' app is totally necessary - it's always handy to know the whereabouts of the closest gas station, drug store or bank especially when you're stuck in an unfamiliar neighbourhood. 'Sit or Squat', self-explanatory! When you gotta go, you gotta go -- and knowing "where" is half the battle. 'iTip' makes good sense for splitting a restaurant bill with friends, 'Flixster' displays the latest flicks, DVD releases & nearby theatres and then there are the usual suspects, Facebook, Wikipedia and Google Earth *all* keep me updated and informed.
At this stage in my iPhone adventure, the king of the hill in my apps universe is...'Shazam'! I encounter identifiable music quite often & then rack my brain for days trying to figure out a song's name & artist. 'Shazam' faces the music and comes up trumps with the goods -- artist, song title -- along with a link as to where I can purchase it & even peruse lyrics, it's the app that keeps on giving. Me likey.

Ah! The thrill of victory and the agony of defeat...*sigh* as a Toronto Maple Leaf fan (albeit a pretty lapse one the past two seasons, can you blame me?), I've had more than my fill of the latter and far from my fair share of the former! With my pro team tumbling to new depths of terribleness, it's time to return to the roots of our national game, where just playing your honest to goodness best is the key to hockey success.
It's time to shift hockey attentions to Kraft Hockeyville. You may ask, where is this hockey utopia?
Kraft Hockeyville is a dream of a contest that benefits local teams & arenas across Canada. Kraft, the CBC, the NHL and the NHLPA encourage all Canadian communities to enter to win a 2010-2011 NHL pre-season game played on THEIR OWN rink *and* $100,000 in arena upgrades (funded generously by Kraft Canada). Sounds unbelievably cool, doesn't it? Imagine having NHL stars sweating it out in YOUR local arena! The $100K, an unheard of donation in these difficult economic times, would transform any local ice rink into a state of the art sporting masterpiece! Simply incredible! Your chance at this once in a lifetime opportunity is just a few computer clicks away!
Entering is super easy... just click here to find the application form & details on how you can make this hockey dream your reality. The competition is now open across Canada with the final day to enter being January 18 at 11:59pm.
Kraft and their Hockeyville partners have made this year's contest even better with added wild card opportunities to win, and four runner-up prizes of $25,000 of arena upgrades.
So what are you waiting for? Enter today and be one step closer to the NHL right on your doorstep!
The Pillsbury Doughboy wishes he were this cute.
The Mix It Up tee from Loyal Army trots out all the ingredients & then displays the finished result on the tee's back shoulder. Yum!

...movie stars, that is.
I can't even think of any of today's movie starlets that even come close to the class, elegance and talent that was Audrey Hepburn. She was one of a kind, a rare gem that only crosses our path once in a lifetime.
Here's a wonderful book celebrating the style & beauty of Ms. Hepburn, "Audrey Hepburn, International Cover Girl". Simply stunning!

The December issue of the UK's 'Easy Living' magazine lists many wonderful gift ideas for the holiday season including a terrific book first mentioned here on Lose That Girl back in July, "Important Artifacts..." by Leanne Shapton.
The UK version features a different hued cover ~ red...perfect for Christmas ~ but the impact this novel brings is still unique & special.
'Important Artifacts and Personal Property from the Collection of Lenore Doolan and Harold Morris, Including Books, Street Fashion and Jewelery' -- not only beholds one of the longest titles ever encountered but also one of the quirkiest reason d'etre. You would be hard pressed to find a cooler storytelling technique.
Focusing on a series of personal miscellany, kooky knickknacks & heartfelt notes once held privately by the fictional coupling of the aforementioned Lenore & Harold, 'Important Artifacts' is set up like a public auction catalogue. Much like when a famous person dies and their personal effects end up on view & purchase via wealthy auction houses, these items are laid bare upon the demise of Lenore & Harold's love. Photos of everyday random objects mingle within the pages, witnesses to the birth of Lenore & Harold's four year relationship, its passionate life & eventual death. A smashed cup, a smudged handwritten note, stolen salt & pepper shakers all gather to tell their part of this fantastic story.
And here's where Shapton excels & really nails the whole relationship thing on its messy head. We all accumulate 'stuff' from daily personal interactions, from friends & lovers - inconsequential items that resonate with a feeling, with a memory related to person once (or still?) deemed special. A crumpled receipt cherished from a favourite eatery where you dined on your first date. A pressed flower remaining from a bouquet gifted by an ex. Even ticket stubs from a memorable concert -- we're all guilty of collecting such life keepsakes. Most objects in the hands of others not associated with their special-ness would just be seen as life clutter. What's a stolen salt shaker without its human context but a rogue table accessory? Suffice it to say, in the eyes and heart of the beholder, it's probably a token from a night to end all nights, full of passion, laughter and unbridled excitement. One person's trash is always another's beloved treasure...especially when wrapped in memories.
I'm well & truly hooked. If you are too, check out Leanne Shapton speaking about her novel from her own perspective. You'll never regard your old relationship souvenirs in the same way again.
Parting is such sweet sorrow! How long do we have to wait for their return? Too long!

An American soldier returns home from Afghanistan to his family - yes, doggies are family too. Adorable!
Time for *all* the soldiers, the Americans, Canadians and Brits to come home! More happy homecomings, please.

I *so* want! Cool but classic.
Also available in black or white from Pedlars UK, but space age silver is really where it's at!

Pains me to say it but this past weekend's 'Saturday Night Live' with guest host, January Jones was one of the worst. EVER. Bland, not funny & featuring annoying performances by the Black Eyed Peas -- is it any wonder that January was poor as well?
The only good part, this video for the Ladies Guide to Party Planning. January doing what she does best... a re-run of a Betty Draper type housewife.
Apologies if some LTG visitors cannot view the clip. Blame NBC - not me!
I love a cheesy award show as much as the next couch potato but even by my own particular TV standards, the noms for the upcoming People's Choice Awards are just plain...weird!
Take Best Actress in a TV Drama. I adore 'Gossip Girl's' Blake Lively...she's wonderful, wears clothes really well, but the buxom blonde has no business being nominated. If GG should have an actress nominee, she should be Leighton Meester. Her portrayal of queen bitch Blair is headband & shoulders above Blake's one-note, mumbly Serena. And if we're going to give 'Gossip Girl' true props....where's Ed Westwick? The 'Gossip Girl' nomination abomination is just the beginning of People's Choice Awards screw ups.
'Mad Men' doesn't even exist in the People's Choice warped reality. Jennifer Love Hewitt gets nominated. So does Charlie Sheen. You get my drift. All together now, "Ew!"
The only saving grace? 'Ugly Betty's' America Ferrera and '30 Rock's' Tiny Fey won nominations -- but that's it. Seriously. Check out the nominations for yourself here. The PCA will be chucked to the undeserving on January 6 on CBS.
This invention is either the silliest contraption ever created or pure genius. Right now, I'm leaning more towards genius... yes, it's exactly what it appears to be -- a locker to keep safe your refrigerated food.
If you share a home with a motley bunch of roommates, or rub shoulders with co-workers who enjoy the sport of stealing other people's lunches, then this fridge cage is for you. It's portable, it locks...it keeps thieving hands at bay. If you've had your lunch stolen, you know how annoying going hungry after a three hour power point presentation can be. I bet the person who dreamt up this lock & lunch box had his fill of his food-nappings.
Just one problem... the handle and the aforementioned portability. If lunch thieves REALLY want your BLT, they'll just cart the whole damn thing away. Use a screwdriver and voila, the lunch will be liberated.
So... maybe it's not such a good idea after all? I think that I'll stick with the moldy sandwich bags to keep my lunch safe instead...

Betty Draper is getting down & dirty live from New York!
January Jones of 'Mad Men' will be hosting SNL tomorrow. Let's hope she can break out of that ice princess persona with the help of Fred, Kristen & co. I'm hope, hope, hoping that a selection of her fellow 'Mad Men' cast members will make a surprise appearance much like they did when Jon Hamm hosted and John Slatterly & Elizabeth Moss showed up.
