HATE IT! Rub & Smell Magazines

Hands up. Who despises the overpowering perfume strips that lurk in magazines?

I do! As soon as I receive a fresh issue, I tear out the smelly culprit & toss it in the bin. Unfortunately the remnants of the stinker do remain for a short spell. At least the full-on stench has been sent to its rightful place.

So you can imagine how pleased I am to see that the July 2011 issue of In Style has incorporated several seasonal scents within its pages. Have a sniff for yourself - there's popcorn, suntan lotion, watermelon... all there to give the reader a new of 'enjoying' the magazine.

I love In Style, but I'm passing on this issue. Sneezing my way through page by page is not my idea of a good time. Gives a whole new meaning to seasonal allergies!

Zooey Deschanel helps Canada make the leap into Spring with her beautiful cover for 'Flare' magazine.

The May issue is on newsstands now.

RATE IT! Smash Hits ~ Saved Online

Duran Duran once professed to loving this magazine, so it's not surprising that as an '80s era Durannie that I would follow suit.

It took me some time before I found my very own imported copy of 'Smash Hits' on a magazine stand here in Toronto. Being a suburban kid in 1984, I'd travel down every Saturday to search out any UK imports that I could get my greedy hands on. Imported 12" singles, magazines, buttons, posters... they were all fair game if we could track them down. That was the hard part. Finding said items. Usually record shops would get one, maybe two in at a time so the key was to get downtown early, and make your decisions quickly otherwise someone else's score was your heartbreak.

My first issue of 'Smash Hits' as fate would have it, featured Simon Le Bon on the cover. I still own that very special issue, so it was with great excitement that I came across this terrific website that aims at capturing every issue of 'Smash Hits' available. Like Punk Never Happened - Brian McCloskey's Smash Hits Archive is my new home away from home. I love it. The coolest thing? If you click on the Smash Hits cover images on his site, it opens up scans of the ENTIRE issue. Brilliant. I'm so hyped that we can explore all the issues that we never found - like the one depicted here with Duran's Roger & Nick as cover stars.

Brian's hardwork in saving and scanning these fabulous music mags should be applauded. So many of us grew up with Smash Hits, and the bands it so lovingly featured (or, made fun of!) - it would be a shame for them to vanish without a trace. Thanks to Brian, we can relive their magic again and again - without all the clutter at home! Well, maybe for some.. I still have many Smash Hits and No. 1 magazines in my midst. Once a Durannie, always a Durannie...

HATE IT! Baby Blitz

Does Jennifer Aniston's quest for a baby really cause magazines to fly off the shelves? A month doesn't seem to go by without one of the tabloids screaming 'Jenn's Baby Joy!', or 'Jenn Looks Pregnant.' Why is everyone all in a lather about Ms. Aniston's baby-making prowess, or lack thereof?

Someone must be buying these issues, or OK, Life & Style and US wouldn't be cranking them out with such regularity.

It's a very personal decision whether to get your sprog-on (or not). Maybe Jenn doesn't want kids? Or perhaps she does but she'd rather get on with it privately without the constant interference of the press. Just seems that some folk cannot rest until Jennifer is on nappy-changing duty tout suite! I'm tired of it so I can only imagine how Jennifer Aniston feels. Sure, getting publicity is always a good thing when you're a slave to the Hollywood press machine but there's are limits, people. Give the girl a break, eh?

Still, I guess it makes a change from the flood of Charlie Sheen tell-alls as of late so perhaps I should just remain grateful for the respite! Shame Jennifer Aniston is the lucky target once again.

RATE IT! Happy Valentine's Day

Happy Chocolate Holiday, everyone! Perhaps I'm the only female who thinks with my stomach on Valentine's Day, but I'd much rather receive some chocolate, or cookies than over-priced red roses - any day! That being said, if there's no chocolate, or cookies greeting me when I wake up, that's okay too. Hardly the end of the world.

Valentine's Day is one of those tricky celebrations... you're never quite sure if people love it, or hate it. If you're single, it can feel like one of the most lonely days of the year. If you're partnered up, it can be a mixed bag as well. To avoid the roller coaster of emotions that February 14 can bring, I've always marked the occasion with cards, and chocolate for my parents, and sister as well as my significant other (depending upon whether I had one by the time Valentine's Day rolled around)... it made the date not so much about smug couples, expensive flowers and candle-lit dinners, but more about appreciating those we love regardless of status. So whether or not you have a Valentine in the traditional sense, be sure to tell the 'other' people in your life how much you love and appreciate them. If everyone took the time in this manner, Valentine's Day probably wouldn't be given such a bad rap.

Anyway... as I step off my soapbox, I want to point you in the direction of my new Valentine's/love themed article for Best Health Magazine's website. Turns out, we are all programmed to fall head over heels in love... and for once it's not Cupid's fault! Read on through this link and see who gets the blame this time! Enjoy!

RATE IT! Mad Over Bieber

You know that you're a pop culture staple when you get the 'Mad Magazine' treatment.

Teen dream, Justin Bieber meets 'Mad' stalwart, Alfred E. Neuman.

Nice work! And not a hair out of place!

RATE IT! The Stars are Aligned

...at least on the cover of Vanity Fair's annual Hollywood issue! And this time it's young Tinseltown decked out in 1930's inspired finery. Oh, and old fart, Robert Duvall. Bet Jack Nicholson is jealous that Robert nabbed this gig instead of him!

Check out Ryan Reynolds, James Franco, Anne Hathaway, Jake Gyllenhaal, Jesse Eisenberg, Mila Kunis, Joseph Gorden Levitt, Andrew Garfield... and well, a bunch of others -- I'm too exhausted from all this star power to list every single one. This special gatefold cover opens up to reveal this year's in-crowd.

It's always interesting to see who does and doesn't make the cut for these special Oscar-timed issues. No Natalie Portman? Hmm.

RATE IT! Kiera By Tom Ford

Yowza! Retro-cool fashion stylings courtesy of Tom Ford!

Actress Kiera Knightly is beautifully showcased on the March cover of UK Elle.

Tom Ford, you've outdone yourself once again. Keira's gorgeous, albeit very skinny. Please eat something, love!

RATE IT! Natalie Portman's Year

2011 looks to be a bumper year for actress Natalie Portman.

There's her engagement, pregnancy and a potential Oscar® nomination all on the cards for 2011. The gal has come a long way from her wooden performance in Star Wars Episode 1.

Nat's currently gracing the Oscar® race cover of the latest Entertainment Weekly magazine.  For some reason, she looks eeriely like celebrity chef, Giada de Laurentiis. Separated at birth?

RATE IT! This Is the End...

The holiday season doesn't only usher in the annual shopping frenzy and terrible weather, it also brings forth all the delicious end of the year magazine review issues. The best on the block (and the least tabloidy) is Entertainment Weekly.

Once again, they've gone for the cover collage of the year's most notorious celebs. Yay, to Don Draper! Yay, to Jimmy Fallon! And is that a zombie in the upper right corner? Hope so! The world needs more 'Walking Dead', pronto!

RATE IT!/HATE IT! Crystalized Katy

With the holiday season upon us, everything is getting the bedazzled treatment - including Katy Perry's lips.

Check out the cover for December's limited edition of 'Harper's Bazaar.' The fashion tome typically issues two covers: one for newsstands, the other for subscribers - so I'm guessing the Swarovski pout is lighting up the mailboxes of loyal subscribers around the globe.

The photo is quite interesting and certainly unique... but overall, it makes me think of sore, chapped lips. Sorry!

HATE IT! Taylor, How Could You?

If the most recent People magazine is to be believed, America's singing sweetheart Taylor Swift had a dalliance with serial shagger, John Mayer.

Am I the only one put off by this news? Taylor seems so young and naive, while John Mayer with a list of conquests to make any guy blush, is just a horrible womanizing creep. Opposites attract, I guess.

Oh, and if you're easily bored by Taylor's 'Untold Story' you could always lose a few brain cells while you persue Kim Kardashian's multiple birthday bashes.

Kill me now.

RATE IT/HATE IT! Blake's Allure

Gossip Girl starlet (and femme fatale of Ben Affleck's 'The Town'), Blake Lively brings a whole lot of pretty to the October issue of Allure magazine.

The thing is... there's some wacky airbrushing going on here. She looks lovely and all, but her eyes look almost other-worldly and her skin looks immaculate - almost Barbie doll-ish in its perfection.

Does such a good looking girl require this much retouching? I don't think so.

RATE IT! Hamming it Up on GQ

British GQ are showcasing their men of the year in their October 2010 issue .... and Mad Men's Jon Hamm gets the cover treatment.

Oooh, la la - yes, please!

Here's a selection of his moody b&w shots from inside the issue.

UPDATE: Jon is also on the cover of October's issue of Details magazine, PLUS he's been confirmed as the October 30th host of Saturday Night Live! Can't wait!

HATE IT! Spare Us the LiLo-Down

UGH!!

File under "We Gave Up Caring Back in 2007"...

Yes, Vanity Fair is foisting Lindsay Lohan upon us once again. Granted, the photo of LiLo is quite pretty but really.... do we need to hear about her so-called tragic life yet again

Well done, VF -- you've just published yet another issue that no one will purchase.

RATE IT! Gossip Returns

The kiddies' return to school means one thing in this household -- the Fall TV season is just around the bend.

It's the most wonderful time of the year...indeed!

Despite losing 24, Lost and Ugly Betty at the end of last Spring, there's still an overwhelming selection of old TV favourites to choose from.

Getting a jump on the pack.... Gossip Girl - which kicks off its fourth season next Monday. In the meantime, Blake Lively is featured on the October cover of UK Marie Claire.

For once she's actually looking soft and pretty on a cover shoot. For such an attractive woman, they often put too much makeup on her - this time they got it just right.

RATE IT! Don Draper Does Rolling Stone

I can't recall the last time I picked up Rolling Stone magazine but this week I think that I'll make an exception.

On first glance it's almost difficult to locate Don Draper through all those breasts! Look at cheeky Peggy! Va va voom!

Joan - a gorgeous siren as always.

Betty - nice bitch face, doll! Am I the only one who thinks the series has been great this season with only a sprinkling of Betty?

HATE IT! Bikini Bashing Dash-Style

In important entertainment news... the Kardashian sisters are fighting over who's the fittest in a swimsuit.

Bet your day just wouldn't be the same if you didn't know this important bit of pop culture fluff.

Who buys this trash? I'm all for writers making a living but seriously? Have some integrity!

RATE IT! Mad for September GQ

Real women have curves!

It's refreshing to see "Mad Men" star, Christina Hendricks gracing the cover of the UK's September issue of GQ magazine.

Simply smashing!
